THE TOUR: Day 10 - Etosha National Park

It's been a long long time... And believe me, I should be studying right now but I so much don't want to! So I decided to enlighten my day (and hopefully yours too :)) with a story of the day 10 of our African tour. This is the first day (out of three) we spent in Etosha (still in Namibia). Etosha means "Great White Place" and the area is what used to be a lake. Now it's just dry, sandy, large pan.
Entering the park started our first game drive. And I guess that all of us who had never been to a game drive before were really excited. First waterhole = first stop. There were plenty of springboks and zebras, some ostriches... What is a waterhole, by the way? Waterhole is a place with water (I know - what a surprise! :)), either natural, or man-made, where animals come to drink and do stuff they do when they're close to water... And of course, it's also a place where all the tourists go because the chance of seeing animals is much higher close to the waterholes...
Jan told us a lot of interesting information about everything we saw (I can't remember it all, of course), explained to us why zebras have black and white stripes, told us that the ostriches are good runners and also pretty dangerous animals (which I remembered later on the way back to Jo'burg when we stopped at a gas station and had to pass one just standing in the middle of the parking lot... there was pretty much no way to avoid it...). And after we saw all the springboks we could (and wanted) to see, we got to the campsite, our base for the night, called Okaukuejo.

That campsite was really nice, especially the cabins in which we weren't staying but inside of which we could see and be jealous. :) Also, there was a wonderful waterhole which I liked and didn't like at the same time. It was like a movie-theater... There were plenty of benches around so that you could sit there the whole day and night and watch who's coming to "get a drink". Also, there were lamps so the waterhole was like a stage where the top stars come to show themselves. Only that the stars are animals who'd be probably happier if people didn't bother them. But seriously - I was there and had to see it too... Although I didn't like the idea much.

After lunch and some relax time, we left for another game drive which lasted until sunset. Now we saw some elephants and giraffes, too. I think I told you already how some animals "lose" their magic when you see them for the 100th time, but elephants do not. They're always amazing. Especially when they're really close to you and you see how huge they are and although you're sitting in a truck (with windows open, though), you don't feel completely safe. I didn't. But nothing happened. :) Talking about elephants - Jan stopped at one point to grab an elephant "poo" and bring it to the truck to show us what it looks like and what it smells like when it's burning. It smells kinda good - the local people, Jan said, use it as a cure for headaches. And don't be disgusted, elephant dung is completely dry... It goes out looking pretty much the same as it did when it got in... :) (But this... Jan standing in the truck with the dung in his hand and passing it around and giving us all the information... that's the real meaning of the phrase "talking shit", isn't it? :))
Ok, and a little secret about game drives. They're exciting only to some point... You're excited and you want to see the animals and stuff, so you're staring outside the windows and waiting and waiting and waiting... And then the waiting gets to long and you get tired and fall asleep. The fact is: game drives are fun when there's something going on all the time, or when they aren't too long. Or when you're driving yourself.

Then we got back to the campsite which was pretty much the highlight of the day as there was a rhino by the waterhole! And after dinner, we took our blankets, sleeping bags, cups of tea and went to spend some time at the waterhole... You could actually sleep there! (But I wouldn't - I went to the toilet during the night and the campsite was full of jackals... which wasn't pleasant... not that I'd be afraid of them but they're like pigeons with four legs! They go into all of the trashcans around, they's steal everything you'd leave outside the tent and they're very noisy too. Just imagining that something like walks over my face while I'm asleep... :)))

So the waterhole... There were two or three of the rhinos... But they left the best spot as soon as the elephants came. And then the giraffes came, that didn't drive off anybody, who are really funny-looking when they're drinking. Oh, and we forgot to charge our batteries so we didn't take any pictures. :) Our original plan - to stay out the whole night (what if a lion comes!!!) didn't work out as it was really cold. Jirka left first and then me and Jill gave up too.

So that's the Day 10 - the first day of official game-driving. Now we're in the middle of the tour and I have no idea when the next post is going to come... I have the state exams next week, I should be studying, you know! :)

You have a "twin" somewhere out there...

I don't mean a real twin, although some people might have one without knowing about it. I mean a person that looks so much like you. I'm not saying that I have met somebody who looked exactly like me. But from time to time, I see people who I think I know. I guess the first time I realized this was in Stellenbosch. After some time, when I knew enough people there and was able to analyze the familiar faces from those I had never seen before, I started to see "new" familiar faces. Faces I know from the Czech Republic. Weird, eh? I know... But really, for example, I'd be walking somewhere, see somebody and think "hey, there' XY!" and then "wait... it isn't her... you're in Africa now, what would she be doing here?". But really - that person would look exactly like somebody I'd seen before.
Why am I writing this? On Wednesday, I went to the library and guess who I saw! Well, of course, you couldn't tell as even I don't know the person. But when I entered I was pretty sure I saw Dave, a guy who lived in Concordie, who spent a semester in Stellenbosch when I was there... It wasn't him, of course, he's from the US, not Brno. :) But still... I thought it's funny.

Will I ever meet my "twin"? Somebody I'd look at and think that I'm looking into a mirror? We'll see... I guess I have to check out all the continents first, haha :) But if I do, I'll inform you about it. Since I'm writing about this, which is nothing amazing, I think you'd appreciate the breathtaking story of me meeting my other me. :)

My American friends and a village/church ball in Otaslavice :)

I promised... So I'll try to write something about the ball that took place on January 5th, in Otaslavice, a small village where my boyfriend's parents live. We went there to show Susan and Jonathan the village ball culture. I must say it was new to me too, as I had never been to a village ball before. Not even a church one. :) Well, the fact that it was a village ball didn't really make it any different as I didn't know anyone there anyway. The fact that it was a church ball made it a little different as the local priest had a speech in the beginning, they also sang a Christmas, Christian, carol (which I found very funny as it was sung by the band that was playing there for the rest of the night and the singer was singing it as if it was the best pop song ever :)))... and the raffle included gifts such as a picture of Jesus Christ and so on... I didn't win anything, but if I had won that one, I would have definitely sent it to Jill. :)

So... Susan, Jonathan, Jirka, Radka - Jirka's sister, me and Jirka's parents, we all shared one table and drank Becherovka together. :) We didn't dance much... But I think we all had fun. Susan won a fitness ball which was the biggest surprise of the evening. :) Oh, and we showed "Slavnosti snezenek", a Czech movie which doesn't make any sense to me, to Jonathan and Susan, who, I guess, were a little scared as we told them they must see it before we go to the ball... :)

Hmm, and I don't know what else to add... Susan, help! :)

Richard Müller a Dan Bárta - Tlaková níž

I don't even know why but I wanted to hear a Richard Muller song. And I found this. It's Czechoslovak this time and it's amazing. Richard Muller, the big guy, says, in the beginning, that he's happy that Dan Barta, the smaller guy :), accepted his invitation to sing at the concert, as he thinks he's the best Czech singer. He is. They both together are just amazing. Enjoy!!!

Regina Spektor making me happy :)

So... I felt really exhausted and sad this evening and could not think of anything better to make me happier than to look for a song I would like. YouTube and Regina Spektor worked well for me... After some time I found this song that made me smile and that is why I am sharing it with you! Enjoy! I am going to bed/study now as I feel much better. :)

I'm back! :)

Dear readers, if there are any left... I'm back! It's been a very long time since I posted my last post that my web browser doesn't even remember the link to my blog anymore. :) There were several reasons that kept me from writing... The pre-Christmas time is busy in general - gifts and all that stuff plus the last week of school is always the week of tests. Then Jirka came home from the US so you understand that I did have better things to do and better places to be than in front of my laptot writing about... whatever... I hadn't seen him for 4 months! Then Christmas, of course, which includes lots of visits, some of which very nice, some not... And now - the exam period and also another visit, this time international. The Americans :) (my nieces called them like that because they couldn't remember their strange-sounding names :)) were here for a few days. Susan and Jonathan (whom I hadn't known before but it was very nice to meet him) came to "research the ball culture in the Czech Republic" and I hope they liked the stay here with me, although I know I do suck as a hostess usually. :) Susan and Jonathan, it was really nice to have you here (I might also post some of the pictures you drew/painted with my nieces, hehe :)).
And now I should be studying... One more exam and then the state exam... Instead, of course, I'm trying to find "new" ways of procrastination.... and now I forgot what I wanted to write... how can I study for an exam when I'm not able to remember this? :)
Anyway, I'll probably start posting about Africa again. I'll also write something about the ball we went to, although it'd be better if Susan or Jonathan wrote it. :)

But first of all, I'm going to update my nieces' blog, which is in Czech only (sorry my dear English-speaking friends...).

I wish you all the best in 2008!!!

PS: Jill, if you ever read this - pretty much the whole A320 crew came to visit me but you... think about it :)
